Football FAQ: So You Won't Look Too Stupid Watching Football With Your Date
* What are
the positions in football?
There are
two types
of position, an offensive position and a
defensive position. One
of the most essential offensive positions is
the quarterback. The protectors
of the quarterback are
the offensive line.
As an additional protection there are
the running-the-ball positions of running back and fullback. These positions are
located in
the backfield, behind
the quarterback. The last offensive position is
the wide receiver.
This position
has the main objective of receiving (catching) the ball when the quarterback
throws (passes) it.
The defensive positions
are: defensive
end, linebacker, cornerback, and safety, who has the last thing to say
about defense. Safeties are located
at the back, while the defensive ends are out front.
* What does each position in football do?
Offensive positions are: quarterback, offensive line, running back, fullback, and wide receiver. The quarterback is the leader of the team. He gets the ball at the beginning of each play and he makes the decision whether to
throw the ball
or run it.
The offensive line's
job is to defend the quarterback
or the running back, especially while they
have the ball. Another thing the offensive line does is block or catch passes.
Running backs and fullbacks are the major hurrying unit. The wide receiver is the one who will usually catch the ball when the quarterback throws it. He must
be tall and quick.
Defensive positions are: defensive end, linebacker, cornerback, and
safety. The defensive ends are the outer part of the defensive team. Linebackers are the most important line-up of the defense.
They are the quick, hard hitters. Cornerbacks are in charge of defending the wide receiver so he can catch the ball and run with it, while the safeties guard and defend the cornerbacks.
* Where did the name football originate?
A form of football called harpaston
was first played by the
ancient Greeks. In the United States it was played
as early as 1609 in
Virginia, though in a simpler form. For the
ball, they used the inflated bladder of a slaughtered pig.
Most "football" today is played in Europe and South America, and is the
sport that North Americans call soccer. Football got its name because in soccer the hands
cannot be used to move the ball. Later, rugby came into popularity, wherein the hands are allowed to be used.
American football has been widely influenced by rugby, and is known throughout the
world today as (guess
what) "American football."
* Where did they get the
shape of the football?
The shape of the football comes from the shape of the ball in the game of rugby. Football has an elongated ball with pointed ends. The ball is perfectly designed for the
player to hold it easily and have a nice aerodynamic motion when it is perfectly thrown. It also has an unpredictable bounce when it hits the ground.
The ball is eleven inches long and about
nine inches wide. All of the manufacturers put some laces
on one side so the players can grip and hold it easily. This is the reason why rugby and football have almost the same shape of ball, in contrast to soccer, which has a round ball that is manipulated mainly by the feet.

Careers with Horses
If
you are anything like Robert Botine Cunningham-Graham, Scottish horseman, writer, and adventurers,
then you know that there is no heaven without horses. If you eat, sleep, and breathe horses, then why not parlay all your time and effort into
a career in
the horse
industry? Can you imagine
a better
way to spend your days?
Surveys done over
the last several years show that there are 7 million horses in
the United States today. And according
to American Horse Council figures,
the horse industry supports more than 1.4 million full-time jobs.
There are
a variety of careers in the horse
industry, from hands-on
jobs like large-animal veterinarian
to jobs that support the industry, like feed and supplement distributor. There are jobs in breeding, showing, health, education, product manufacturing, research, recreation, and service industries to name just
a few that come to mind. And
one of these areas is most likely just right for you!
So, how do you find
a job in the horse industry that is right for you? Well, before you start randomly
sending out resumes to
every horse-related employer you know of, you need to
spend some time considering the type of career you want. In many cases, you'll have to come up
with a plan that will lead you to that career. As wonderful as
it is that you
want to be a large animal veterinary technician, no one is going to hire you without the right credentials. In other words, like most worthwhile pursuits in life, you are going to have to spend a little time and effort to reach your goals.
So, are you ready? Answer these few simple questions and you'll be on your way to finding an equine career that is right for you:
*
What do I
want out of a horse career? Do you want
daily contact with horses, or are you
interested in working in a supporting field without daily contact? There are pros and cons to
both. A supporting role may offer you a higher income, regular
hours, more job stability, and better benefits, but a hands-on career gives you flexibility and the ability to work around your
favorite animals every day. What is more important to you? Think
very seriously about your own interests, abilities, and personality. It won't hurt to spend a few minutes writing down why you want to work with horses.
* What experience and
education do I currently have? There is no
teacher like experience, but is it more important than
education in the horse industry? That depends on the job. For those seeking skilled hands-on positions like trainers, barn managers, and riding instructors, the more time you've spent around horses the better. Other choices, such as equine
vet, writer, public relations expert, or lawyer
require a college education and additional training.
* What experience and education am I
willing to get to
achieve my career goals? If you require experience and education to break into a career in the horse industry, you need to have a
good understanding of how much time and money it is going to cost to reach your goals. Do you have the time and money to spare, and are you willing to do so?
* What income do I need? Most people work in the horse industry because their love of horses supercedes their love of money. Many hands-on jobs provide minimal pay and benefits just for the pleasure of being around horses. Salaries improve with higher-level hands on jobs, and support jobs often pay the most and offer the best benefits. Before you
make a commitment to a career, know how much money you need to live.
Then do some research to find out if your career
can realistically support you.
* Where should I enter the industry in order to have a good chance of meeting my goal? Whatever career track you are pursuing, enter the industry in a job that you can handle with your
present skills and experience. Getting in over your head may not only prevent you from advancing, it is dangerous! Once you've figured out your entry level, you can work your way up as you gain experience.

529 To The Rescue
Like every parent,
you too expect
the best
for your child-
the best
clothes, best house, best school
and the best
college. Expecting the best for your child does not mean
that you will always be able to give him/her the best. There may be financial constraints
that you can face. The big problem arises when you
pay for your child's higher
education. 529
is an effective tool
that will be useful for you in paying the
education cost of college.
This
is a known truth that the
college costs go
up each year. In order to provide your child with a good higher education you should start saving money now. 529 is an investment
plan that helps you
save money in a smarter way. 529 plan is the program, which takes away all your worries related to your ward's future education. It is a plan that can really
help you save money for the college fees. 529
plans offer two options, one is the college savings plan
and the other is prepaid tuition plan.
Some of the advantages of 529 plan are:
* The money that you earn is
income-tax free.
* You
have complete
control over the account proceedings. In other words, the parent who is
investing money in the account has control over the assets
within the program. The
age of the beneficiary doesn't matter; the control still remains in your hands and not your childs.
* You can change the beneficiary of the plan at any time.
* The money that you withdraw can be used for
expenses such as college fees, books, boarding charges, lodging charges, computers etc.
* Your familys income level is not a constraint for saving in the 529 plans.
If you want to ensure
quality education for your child in the future years,
then you must start saving now. For example,
suppose your child is 8
years old, then you have almost 10
years to save for his/her college education. A 529 plan will help you do so smoothly and with a lot of ease. Ten years of saving
might seem a long time, but
if you look at the increasing costs of college education, you will
realize how crucial saving in these years will be.
So, if you don't start saving now then realize that you are putting your child's future at stake.

Does Your Sportsbook Post Betting Lines On Just About Anything?
Remember when youd saunter into
a sportsbook,
or contacted
one on the Internet, because you wanted
to do
a little sports betting? You still can
but increasingly
sportsbooks are catering
to a more varied wagering clientele
that is demanding betting lines
on topics that do not meet even
the broadest definition
of sports. Ambitious sportsbook
operators, eager
to please their customers (not to mention fearful that theyll lose them to someone else) are obliging, often
offering wagers designed specifically
for just one bettor.
That was certainly the case when one proud father demanded that
a British bookmaker give him a price on his newborn son scoring a goal for England in a
World Cup event, two decades down the life line.
The sportsbook quoted a price
and the man took it.
No one knows for sure when sports betting emporiums began posting
and accepting wagers on non sports related events but some trace it back to 1960 when the
William Hill Agency, one of Britains
most respected bet takers, offered
10,000/1 odds on a man landing on the moon before the
end of the decade. Neil Armstrongs one small step for man turned out to be one giant payoff for the lucky bloke who made the wager.
Nowadays, betting lines are provoked
as much by the entertainment industry and current events as they are by traditional sports, such as football, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, auto racing boxing, golf and horse racing.
Most sportsbooks now offer lines on a variety of reality TV shows, including American
Idol, Survivor, Dancing With the Stars, Project Runway, Amazing Race, and several of the countrys versions of Big Brother. The options even go beyond who will win and to which contestant will be next to be ousted (or auffed by
Heidi Klum in the case of Project Runway) to such obscurities as to how many times American Idol judge Randy Jackson will say dog during a particular broadcast.
As proof that the line between entertainment and sports betting hasnt just been smudged but obliterated, many sportsbooks routinely offer odds on the gender of the offspring of celebrities, including Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie and Katie Holmes. In the case of the Tom Cruise/Holmes production, the choices were boy, girl, and other. OK, just kidding.
But celebrity foibles often are the stuff of betting lines including whether actress Winona Ryder
would be
convicted of shop lifting, as well as the ultimate resolution of court matters regarding OJ Simpson, Michael Jackson and Robert
Blake. (If you had the not guilty trifecta then youre
probably set for life).
Oddly, although Elvis Presley left the building several decades ago, sportsbooks still offer bountiful odds on a documented sighting of the King of Rock n Roll. The same holds true for the Loch Ness Monster. (If you happen to find the two of them having a beer in Memphis, ask for a really big price).
Some sportsbooks also offered odds on which Cardinal (Albert Pujols was not a choice)
would replace Pope
John Paul II, which canine would take the
Best in Show ribbon
at the Westminster Kennel Club and which woman would be named Miss World.
The old adage that everybody talks
about the weather but no one ever does anything about it
is no longer true now that several British books offer betting on whether there will be snow on Dec. 25. Bettors no longer have to dream about a white Christmas; they can wager whether the white stuff will make an appearance at specific locations that day.
Politics is another favorite provenance for intriguing betting lines. The Conservatives are favored to take over for the Labour Party the next time Brits go to the polls while the race for US President finds NY Senator and former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton an even money choice to get the nomination of the Democratic Party while
Arizona Senator John McCain is the 3/2 choice to head the ticket for the Republicans. Should it pan out that way, most oddsmakers make Clinton a slight favorite over McCain to take up residency at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in January of 2009.
Cant wait for 2008? Bet the US midterm elections, including key senate races and which party will control Congress, now.
Perhaps the strangest of all wagering proposals was one that the world would come to an end on a certain date. Some people
did bet that would happen, evidently banking on collecting once they got to the afterlife. Didnt they realize, if
gambling abolitionists are
correct, that heaven doesnt have a sportsbook?
